Villarreal midfielder Robert Pires has been suspended one game for insulting a Spanish league referee following a loss to Xerez.

The Frenchman reportedly used profanities in anger at referee Rubinos Perez, who allowed Xerez's late goal in a 2-1 victory Sunday to stand despite an apparent handball coming in the buildup.

Pires said: "I didn't say what the referee wrote in his match report. There were a lot of people, a lot of noise and I can understand that what he heard might sound like an insult against him and his family, but that's not the case."

Villarreal dropped into last place and remains without a victory this season.
