Valverde agrees to one-year contract extension with Athletic Bilbao

BILBAO, Spain --

Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde has agreed to a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the Basque club through the end of next season.

After a shaky start to the campaign, Valverde has guided Bilbao to the final of the Copa del Rey, where it will face Barcelona at Camp Nou on May 30.

Bilbao can also clinch a seventh-place finish in the Spanish league with a win over Villarreal on Saturday, which will earn the club a Europa League berth.

Valverde has coached Bilbao for the past two seasons and also from 2003-05.
