Manchester United says Antonio Valencia is undergoing surgery on a serious ankle injury sustained in the Champions League match against Rangers.

The Premier League club is expected to say Thursday how long the Ecuador winger will be out for, but United manager Alex Ferguson says Valencia could be sidelined for the rest of the season.

The 25-year-old Valencia was wearing an oxygen mask as he was carried off on a stretcher at Old Trafford, with what Ferguson said looked to be a broken and dislocated ankle.

The injury occurred in an innocuous-looking challenge with Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot in the 58th minute of Tuesday's 0-0 draw. Broadcasters did not show replays of the incident.
