United States striker Jozy Altidore has apologized for head butting an opponent while playing for Hull in what could be his last match for the English Premier League club.

Altidore was ejected in the 50th minute Saturday for a clash with Sunderland defender Alan Hutton, who had thrown the ball at him.

Altidore was suspended for Hull's last two games of the season, after which the American's loan from Spanish club Villarreal expires.

``I'm so sorry about yesterday,'' Altidore tweeted on Sunday. ``(I) made a stupid, immature and costly mistake. I apologize to Hull City and the fans who I let down. I let my emotions get the best of me and lost my composure. Believe it or not this year playing for Hull was to date the best trip I've ever been on.''

Hull lost 1-0 to Sunderland and is a long shot to avoid relegation. Altidore is set to make the U.S. World Cup squad.
