UEFA says it has opened a full investigation into rioting by Serb fans in Italy and warns the team could be disqualified from the European Championship or excluded from future competitions.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel will hear the case on Oct. 28.

UEFA's rules allows it to disqualify and exclude teams from international competitions.

The panel will use the findings of UEFA's match delegate in Genoa, David Petriashvili of Georgia, and referee Craig Thomson from Scotland.

Thomson abandoned Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier after seven minutes when Serb fans threw flares and fireworks onto the field.

The kickoff was delayed 45 minutes, and visiting fans earlier clashed with Italian police in Genoa.
