FC Twente beat Zenit St. Petersburg 3-0 in the opening leg of the Europa League's last 16 on Thursday.

Zenit, which had an early goal disallowed by English referee Mark Cluttenburg for an offside, enjoyed plenty of possession early on but it was Twente which took the scoring initiative with Luuk de Jong heading in Emir Bajrami's cross in the 24th minute.

Roberto Rosales cleared Dani's header on the line in the 34th as Zenit continued to threaten. Unmarked Bruno Alves could have leveled for Zenit off Danko Lazovic's cross in the 45th but his header went wide.

Midfielder Denny Landzaat volleyed in Twente's second in the 54th, then De Jong headed Theo Janssen's cross in injury time for the third. Key defender Douglas will miss Twente's trip to Russia after he was booked.

Lazovic nearly pulled one back in the 61st capitalizing on a rare Douglas error but Twente goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov was alert to make a save. Mihaylov denied Lazovic again 10 minutes later, making a diving save to block the Serbia forward's close-range effort.

Meanwhile, Ajax lost 1-0 to Spartak Moscow with Alex netting the lone goal in the 57th.
