It's transfer deadline day in Europe as clubs look to make last-minute additions to their squads for the new season. Here you'll find the latest permanent and loan signings as they are completed across the continent.
---
Update at 2210: The transfer window has now officially closed, but clubs are still announcing the last minute arrivals, or in the case of Chelsea, departures, of players. The European champion says on its website that Ghana international midfielder Michael Essien has joined Spanish league champion Real Madrid on a season-long loan.
The 29-year-old Essien was signed by Jose Mourinho when he was Chelsea manager in 2005 and Mourinho has now signed him again at Madrid.

The 29-year-old Barton had been serving a 12-match ban for elbowing Carlos Tevez, kicking Sergio Aguero and trying to head-butt Vincent Kompany. Cameroon international Stephane Mbia has signed for the London club in Barton's place in a permanent transfer from Marseille.
''It was an easy decision because this is an important move for my career. It has always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League, which I believe is the best league in the world,'' Mbia said.
Meanwhile, Aston Villa has confirmed on its official Twitter page that Belgium international striker Christian Benteke has completed his transfer from Genk. The 21-year-old Benteke has signed a four-year deal.

The 21-year-old Ramirez has agreed a four-year contract and his new manager Nigel Adkins expressed his excitement at the arrival of the Uruguay international.
''What we have got is one of the most exciting prospects in world football coming to St Mary's,'' he said. ''There is a lot of ambition at the Football Club and we are all delighted that Gaston is going to come and join us.''
The transfer of Ramirez has not gone through in time for him to make his debut against Manchester United on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Chelsea has loaned attacking midfielder Gael Kakuta to Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem on a season-long deal.
There is now only four hours remaining for Premier League clubs to complete its business until the transfer window reopens in January.

''I'm very happy to become a Swansea player. I want to thank the club and (Swansea manager) Michael Laudrup for making me feel like a very important player. Now I want to repay the faith on the football field,'' Hernandez said.
---
1550: Southampton manager Nigel Adkins is hopeful Uruguay international midfielder Gaston Ramirez will soon join the club from Bologna.
''We are very optimistic and very hopeful. A lot of work has gone into this deal and all being well, he will become our player. I believe we are very, very close.''
---
1530: Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has been speaking about the possibility of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris leaving the club to join Tottenham and the difficulties he has experienced in speaking to officials at the north London club.
''Hugo Lloris is on a plane to go to Tottenham even if the deal isn't finalized. We're dealing with executives who are very pernickety, even questionable, during negotiations because they alternate on promises that were made during the night. What's true at 5 in the morning no longer is at 10 o'clock.
''For me it's very important that Hugo finds himself in a club of quality but also a club that, in its values and commitments, allows him to feel comfortable. There's a 50-50 chance that Lloris will go to Tottenham.''
---

Berbatov scored 56 goals in 149 games at Old Trafford.
---

---

Three midfielders have left Tottenham so far today, surely manager Andre Villas-Boas has a replacement lined up?
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been speaking to the club's website about his target in the remaining hours of the transfer window. ''There are a number of players we're enquiring about. There is no doubt we need to add goals to the team. That was always an objective when I first came in,'' Rodgers said. ''''There'll be hopefully one or two coming in.''
---
