Torres scores as Liverpool beats West Brom 1-0

Spain striker Fernando Torres scored the second-half winner as Liverpool beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 on Sunday for its first victory of the Premier League season.
Torres squandered a number of half-chances in the first half but found the target in the 65th minute when he met a cross by Dirk Kuyt with a right-foot volley into the bottom corner.
Center back Martin Skrtel also went close for Liverpool, who bounced back from a 3-0 defeat at Manchester City on Monday to move up into mid-table on four points.
Midfielder James Morrison was shown a straight red card in the 85th minute for West Brom, which slipped to its second defeat in three matches.
Torres started on his own up front after being rested for Liverpool's win in Trabzonspor on Thursday - which qualified the five-time European champions for the group stage of the Europa League.
The Spaniard was central to most of his side's attacking moves at Anfield but came up against a well-organized defense at West Brom, who conceded six goals at Chelsea on the opening day of the season.
A third-minute shot from Torres went straight at goalkeeper Scott Carson before a close-range effort was blocked. Torres was then denied by Gabriel Tamas' sliding challenge as the score remained goalless heading into the second half.
Torres put away Liverpool's first real chance of the second half when, after combining well with Kuyt, he volleyed a shot into the ground and past Carson to break the deadlock.
Skrtel, who enjoyed a relatively easy day at the back for Liverpool, almost extended the home side's lead. The defender just missed the target after Kuyt's lay-off.
Before being substituted in the 89th minute, Torres came close to adding a second before he was fouled by Morrison, who was sent off by referee Lee Probert.
