Toronto ends 9-game losing streak in MLS

Toronto FC ended its Major League Soccer-record nine-game losing streak to open a season with a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Union on a late goal by Danny Koevermans on Saturday.

Nick Soolsma outmuscled a Union defender in the box and fed the ball to Koevermans at the near post. The big Dutch striker's first attempt bounced off goalie Chris Konopka, but he scored with his second try.

Koevermans came into the game in the 62nd minute, his third substitute appearances in four games since returning from a groin injury.

Philadelphia played without goalie Zac MacMath (concussion symptoms) and Chase Harrison (ankle sprain).

DYNAMO 2, GALAXY 1

At Houston, Andre Hainault's goal in the 57th minute gave the Dynamo a victory over David Beckham and the Galaxy.

Hainault scored to break a 1-all game on a header off a corner kick by Brad Davis.

Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Edson Buddle in the 10th minute.

Houston got the equalizer in the 38th minute on an own goal by the Galaxy's Mike Magee when a shot by Houston's Brian Ching went off the crossbar and bounced off Magee and into the net.

Beckham missed two good scoring chances when two separate free kicks were knocked away by goalkeeper Tally Hall in the second half.

UNITED 3, REVOLUTION 2

At Washington, Maicon Santos scored in the second half to lead United past the Revolution.

Dejan Jakovic and Brandon McDonald scored in the first half for United. The Washington club is unbeaten in its last eight home matches, winning its last five.

Saer Sene and A.J. Soares scored early in the second half for New England.

CREW 2, FIRE 1

At Columbus, Eddie Gaven and Emilio Renteria each scored to lead Columbus past Chicago.

Gaven scored from 19 yards (meters) in the 9th minute with a low shot inside the left post.

He then helped make it 2-0 in the 43rd by passing to Renteria, who shirked defender Austin Berry and put the ball into the left corner of the net.

Columbus has won two straight and is 3-0-2 in its last five.

RAPIDS 3, IMPACT 2

At Commerce, Colorado, Jamie Castrillon scored in the 83rd minute as the Rapids beat the Impact.

Goalkeeper Greg Sutton batted away a shot by Scott Palguta, but the ball came back to Castrillon who put a header into the net.

Drew Moor and Jeff Larentowicz added first half goals for the Rapids, who have won their last two games.

REAL SALT LAKE 3, FC DALLAS 2

At Sandy, Utah, Alvaro Saborio scored a pair of goals in the second half and Nat Borchers came up with the game-winner in stoppage time to lift Real Salt Lake.

The win helped Salt Lake extend its unbeaten streak to six games.

FC Dallas is winless in nine games, despite getting second-half goals from Matt Hedges and Blas Perez, and hasn't won in Utah since 2007.

WHITECAPS 1, TIMBERS 1

In Portland, Oregon, Darren Mattocks scored in the 84th minute to salvage a draw for the Whitecaps against the Timbers.

Striker Kris Boyd scored in the 67th minute for the Timbers, who were coming off a victory over Chicago that pulled them out of last place in the Western Conference.

The Whitecaps remained a victory away from matching their win total from last season when they finished last in the West.

CHIVAS USA 1, SOUNDERS 1

At Carson, California, Juan Agudelo scored his first goal for Chivas USA in a draw with Seattle.

Agudelo was playing his second match for Chivas since being dealt by the New York Red Bulls. He scored in the 57th minute on a cross from former Sounders defender James Riley.

David Estrada got the equalizer four minutes later on a cross from Alex Caskey. It was his fifth goal of the season.
