Argentina striker Carlos Tevez scored one goal and made the other as Manchester City exploited defensive errors to beat Wigan 2-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.

Tevez pounced on Mohamed Diame's backward-header to put City in front in the 43rd minute and then set up Yaya Toure to score his first goal for the club in the second half after Maynor Figueroa's poor headed clearance.

''We never took any risks and we didn't let Wigan create any chances,'' City manager Roberto Mancini said. ''We played very well in second half.''

After five matches City is fourth in the standings with eight points, while Wigan is in the relegation zone with half as many points.

''We created Manchester City's best chances,'' Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said. ''You cannot give these sort of goals away and we really let ourselves down. If you look at today's performance I don't think we looked solid and from time to time we let our supporters down.''

Tevez came close to giving the visitors a 14th-minute lead when he ran at the Wigan defense before hitting a low shot from long range which flashed just wide of the post.

But with City struggling, Wigan began to enjoy more possession and had its first shot on target on the half-hour, when Franco di Santo skidded a low shot from the left into goalkeeper Joe Hart's arms.

City's opener had a great deal of fortune about it as Hart's deep goal kick struck Diame and Tevez nipped in to loft the opener gently over the advancing goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi.

City came close to extending its lead in the first minute of the second half when David Silva made space on the right and crossed for Tevez, who miskicked in front of goal.

City's players had more purpose about them and that was underlined by a jinking run by Tevez which was finally brought to an end deep inside the penalty area by Steve Gohouri.

Pablo Zabaleta hit a shot from a tight angle straight at Al Habsi in what was the Wigan keeper's first save of the match.

A slack pass by Gohouri at the back in the 68th let in Tevez, who hit his shot straight at Al Habsi.

And in the 70th, Figueroa failed to head clear allowing Tevez to cross across the face of goal for Toure to fire home at the far post.

Tevez almost added his second shortly afterward with a left-foot effort that flashed across the goal.
