Arsenal had to settle for a 2-2 draw at 10-man Wigan in the Premier League on Wednesday after defender Sebastien Squillaci scored a late own goal.

Wigan was rewarded for some early pressure when Ben Watson converted a penalty in the 18th minute, but Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin leveled for Arsenal in the 39th with a superb volley and Denmark forward Nicklas Bendtner put the visitors ahead just five minutes later.

Wigan's attempts to salvage a draw suffered a setback in the 78th minute when Charles N'Zogbia was sent off, but it was all square three minutes later when Arsenal's Squillaci headed an attempted clearance into his own net.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had made eight changes from the side which beat Chelsea 3-1 and his second-string side lacked the team's usual fluency.

The pressure told in the early stages when Wigan broke swiftly and N'Zogbia burst down the right before tumbling over Laurent Koscielny's trailing leg just inside the box. The referee had no doubts about the penalty decision and Watson made no mistake with the resulting spot-kick.

Arsenal needed some inspiration to get back into the match and it was provided in the closing stages of the half by Arshavin, who had previously been particularly quiet.

Striker Marouane Chamakh lobbed the ball on for Bendtner to hit a shot on the bounce and although Ali Al Habsi managed to keep it out, the ball then dropped for Arshavin to strike a lovely scissor-kick back past the Wigan keeper.

The goal seemed to breathe life into Arsenal and particularly Arshavin, who followed up by creating a goal for Bendtner in the 44th minute. The Russian midfielder won possession in the centre circle and bustled forward before picking out Bendtner, who used his strength to brush off a couple of weak challenges and drive his shot home from a dozen meters (yards).

By the closing stages, Arsenal looked to have done enough for victory, particularly after N'Zogbia was dismissed for pushing his head into substitute Jack Wilshere's face after an exchange of words.

But Squillaci handed Wigan a share of the points when Wigan's Hugo Rodallega headed back a corner at the far post and Arsenal's French defender, trying to thwart Gary Caldwell, could only head into his own net.
