Taylor: Toon deserved a draw

Goal hero Steven Taylor felt Newcastle were good value for their late equaliser in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The defender headed home deep into injury time to secure the Magpies a point.

And while he shrugged off his second goal in successive matches - "Right place at the right time, I guess" - he was full of praise for a strong team performance.

"It was a well-deserved draw, it was a great effort," he told Sky Sports 1.

"Tackles were flying in, it was a good physical contest but we took the game to them, I think they probably expected us to come here and defend."

Newcastle had trailed twice in the match, to Branislav Ivanovic's early goal and Alex's header.

But Jonas Gutierrez deflected home Ryan Taylor's free-kick to quickly draw them level first time around and Steven Taylor's intervention ensured a top-10 finish in the Premier League remains within their grasp with one game remaining.

Goalscorer Taylor continued: "We've got West Brom next week at St James' Park and we want to finish on a high and look forward to next season."

Manager Alan Pardew handed opportunities to a number of young talents today, with Shane Ferguson starting the game and Kazenga LuaLua and Sammy Ameobi introduced from the bench in the second half.

"They've been waiting for their chance and it's great for them to come here to Stamford Bridge and play against the best players in the world," Taylor added.
