Former Iraq international Ali Abbas has signed a two-year contract with Sydney FC in Australia's A-League football.
Sydney FC said in a statement that the attacking midfielder, a member of the Iraqi national team that won the Asian Cup in 2007, had agreed to terms over the weekend and trained for the first time with the team on Monday.
Abbas, who has spent the last three years playing for the A-League's Newcastle Jets, fled Iraq after playing an under-23 international against Australia north of Sydney in 2008. He was later granted asylum to remain in Australia.
New Sydney coach Ian Crook said his team was ''very lucky to have beaten off competition from other clubs for his signature.''
