Swiss club Sion fires coach Bernard Challandes

Swiss club Sion has fired Bernard Challandes and appointed Laurent Roussey as its 22nd coach in six seasons.

Challandes survived nine months at Sion but was fired after a 1-0 loss to league leader FC Basel on Sunday left the club in fifth place, trailing by 11 points.

Sion says it cannot afford the poor recent results, which have jeopardized its challenge for a place in European competition next season.

Challandes guided FC Zurich into the group stage of the Champions League last season, where it won at AC Milan.

Sion says it appointed Roussey until the end of the season. The Frenchman coached Sion nine seasons ago and led Saint-Etienne to a fifth-place finish in the French league in 2008.
