Swansea says defender Alan Tate has broken his leg in a ''bizarre golfing accident.''

The Premier League newcomers say Tate was a passenger in a golf buggy that lost control on Sunday afternoon at a club in Swansea.

The 28-year-old Tate was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a broken tibia of his left leg, which Swansea describes as a ''bitter blow.''

The vice captain is one of only three current Swansea players who have played in all four divisions with the south Wales club which was promoted to the top flight in May.

Tate is in his 10th season with Swansea and has played more than 300 games for the club, but did not feature in Saturday's 0-0 draw with Sunderland.
