Sunderland defender Titus Bramble has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

The 29-year-old Bramble was detained after the alleged rape of a woman was reported to police early Wednesday morning.

Bramble, who joined Sunderland from Premier League club rival Wigan in the offseason, did not play in Tuesday night's 2-1 home loss to West Ham in the League Cup.

Northumbria Police say they ''received a report of the rape of a woman at a city center hotel in Newcastle in the early hours.'' Police said a 30-year-old man was also arrested.
