Sunderland 'close on Peruzzi'

Velez Sarsfield president Miguel Calello has confirmed he has given Gino Peruzzi permission to discuss a move to Sunderland.

Peruzzi was recently linked with Manchester City and Inter Milan, but the Argentina international now appears to be closing on a switch to the Stadium of Light.

The right-back, who can also play on the wing, has seemingly emerged as the latest target for Paolo Di Canio as the Sunderland boss overhauls his squad.

Calello has claimed an agreement has been reached with Sunderland and it is now down to Peruzzi to settle on personal terms with the Premier League club.

"We talked about the payment conditions and the values, we reached an agreement quickly," Calello told Rock & Pop.

"Now Gino Peruzzi's representatives and the English club need to reach an agreement.

"When this kind of proposal comes, it's hard to say no. If we turn them down, we might never receive this kind of proposal again."

A potential deal for the 21-year-old follows on from Sunderland agreeing a fee with AZ Alkmaar to sign American striker Jozy Altidore.

And Di Canio has already added Vito Mannone, Modibo Diakite, Valentin Roberge, Cabral, David Moberg Karlsson and Duncan Watmore to a squad which survived a brush with relegation last season.
