Stuttgart's defender Gotoku Sakai has been banned for three matches in the Bundesliga for a red card he received in the 3-1 win over Schalke on Saturday.

The German Football federation handed down the ban on Monday. The suspension means the Japan defender will not play again in the Bundesliga until after the winter break. There are two more rounds before the league breaks off for its winter recess.

Sakai was sent off after a rough tackle on Schalke's Lewis Holtby.

Sakai will miss matches against Mainz and Wolfsburg.
