Rafael van der Vaart scored twice as Tottenham beat Orlando Pirates 3-0 in the final of a preseason tournament in South Africa on Saturday.

Van der Vaart netted in each half and Jermain Defoe added a third for the English Premier League team's first win in three matches on tour.

Van der Vaart curled in a 35th-minute free kick and the Netherlands midfielder broke clear for his second in the 53rd after a defense-splitting pass from left back Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

Defoe's volley at the far post from a Gareth Bale cross made it 3-0 with three minutes left. Tlou Segolela missed an 80th-minute penalty for Pirates, South Africa's league champions.

Tottenham was given an automatic place in the final of the three-team tournament at Johannesburg's Ellis Park. It was captained for the second straight game by midfield playmaker and Chelsea transfer target Luka Modric.

Spurs had begun their preparations for the Premier League season with two lackluster performances in South Africa - a 1-0 loss to Kaizer Chiefs and a 1-1 draw with Pirates - before this comfortable win.

''We took our chances today and that was the difference,'' Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp said. ''They've (the players) all worked hard, we've had a good trip and now we'll go home happy. By the time the season starts, we'll be ready to go.''

South Africa internationals Steven Pienaar and Bongani Kumalo both started for Tottenham on Saturday. Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes made his first appearance on the trip.

In-form midfielder Van der Vaart beat Pirates goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa with a free kick for the second time in four days to open the scoring, finding the bottom right corner with his dipping, left-foot strike.

Pirates responded with a couple of threatening runs from Segolela, but striker Bongani Ndulula missed two clear chances in front of goal.

Van der Vaart scored his third goal in two games early in the second half after he was set free by Assou-Ekotto's long pass. Meyiwa blocked the initial shot from close range, but the Dutchman lobbed the rebound into the far corner.

Segolela earned Pirates' penalty when his shot was blocked by defender Sebastien Bassong's hand. But he hit his spot kick against the inside of the left post and it flashed across Gomes' goal and away to safety for Spurs.

Bale was brought on for Modric in the 71st and troubled Pirates with his pace and skill down the left wing. He had a goal disallowed for offside a minute after his entrance, but combined with fellow second-half substitute Defoe in the 87th to seal victory.

''I think it's good. We played good games against good teams,'' Van der Vaart said of Tottenham's preseason buildup. ''This game (the final) was a friendly game but you still want to win. We wanted to do much better than before. I scored two nice goals and overall we are very happy.''
