Sporting Lisbon says it has signed India captain Sunil Chhetri on a two-year contract in a bid to promote its brand on the subcontinent market.
The Portuguese club said the 27-year-old striker will initially play in the reserve team after scoring seven goals in 21 games last season for the Kolkata-based Mohun Bagan. He has previously played for Kansas City Wizards in Major League Soccer.
Sporting released a statement late Wednesday announcing the signing but didn't provide financial details of the transfer.
Sporting hasn't won the Portuguese league title since the 2001-02 season. It finished fourth last campaign and will play in the Europa League next season.
