Sporting Braga takes care of Partizan
Rodrigo Lima scored a stunning free-kick to set Braga on its way to a 2-0 win over Partizan Belgrade on Tuesday, the Portuguese club's first victory in the Champions League group stage.
The Brazilian forward struck after 35 minutes, lifting the ball over the defensive wall with pace to beat Partizan 'keeper Vladimir Stojkovic from 30 yards (meters).
Braga wrapped up the win in injury time when substitute Luis Aguiar squared the ball for Matheus to tap into an empty net after a swift counter-attack.
Braga, who finished second in the Portuguese top flight last season, qualified for the group stage for the first time by beating Celtic and then Sevilla, but was humbled 6-0 by Arsenal in its first game in Group H before a 3-0 defeat at home by Shakhtar Donetsk.
But Domingos Paciencia's side deservedly beat Partizan, which has now lost all three of its games in Group H and is all but out of contention for the knockout phase.
There was precious little goalmouth action for the crowd at the picturesque Estadio Municipal to enjoy until Lima lit up the game with his sublime opener.
Moreira brought down Lima and though Stojkovic got a hand to the Brazilian's free-kick, the power and movement on the ball was too much for the Serbia international.
Partizan almost equalized straight away but Aleksandar Lazevski volleyed wide from Milan Smiljanic's pinpoint pass.
In the second half, Braga goalkeeper Felipe made a smart double save from Nemanja Tomic's initial shot and Sasa Ilic's follow-up.
At the other end, Stojkovic kept his side in the game with saves from Paulao and Matheus but, with Partizan pressing for an equalizer late in the game, Braga took advantage of the gaps in defense to make it 2-0.
The two sides meet again in Belgrade in their next group game on Nov. 3.
