Scottish Premier League clubs have backed plans to trim the top division by two clubs as part of an overhaul of the country's league structure.

Scotland currently has 12 teams in the Premier League and 10 in Division One, the next rung down on the league ladder.

However, a statement released by the SPL on Monday says broad support has been given "to progressing a 10-team Premiership and a 12-team Championship at the top of a pyramid for Scottish football."

Leading clubs have asked the executive team of the SPL's own Strategic Review Group "to further develop aspects of these proposals."
