Rickie Lambert scored from a penalty in the last minute of the game to give Southampton a 1-0 winning start to its Premier League season at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
Defender Luke Shaw was fouled in the penalty area by Yousouff Mulumbu and Lambert, who scored on his England debut on Wednesday, converted the penalty kick.
Southampton had come closest to scoring in a game that looked set to finish goalless before the penalty, when captain Adam Lallana had a goal disallowed for offside.
West Brom came close to scoring in the first half when midfielder Graham Dorrans shot narrowly over from a free kick.
