South Korea beats Syria in friendly

South Korea eased past Syria 1-0 in a friendly match Thursday in a tuneup ahead of next month's Asian Cup.

The Koreans, 40th in the FIFA world rankings, have set up their training base in Abu Dhabi ahead of their Asian Cup campaign which starts in Qatar Jan. 7. South Korea are among the favorites, since it has World Cup experience and won the Asian Cup title twice before.

After a rather listless first half, South Korea started pressing against the 107th-ranked Syrians and dominated the possession after that.

Ji Dong-won, one of the newcomers to the Korean squad, scored the winner in the 82nd minute. Ji smashed a left-footer to the top left corner past goalkeeper Mosab Balhous after outsmarting two defenders inside the penalty area.
