The governing body of South American football says it will ask FIFA to approve the same lengthy regional qualifying system for the 2014 World Cup that has been in effect since 1995.

The South American federation voted Wednesday to continue with the qualifying system that requires all teams to play home and away against every other team. With Brazil hosting and not having to qualify, that makes nine teams playing 16 games each.

Federation spokesman Nestor Benitez said he expected FIFA to approve the plan. Benitez also said he expected FIFA to continue awarding four automatic berths to South America with the fifth-place team facing a playoff for another spot.
