The South African consulate will sponsor a mini World Cup tournament in New York just ahead of the start of soccer's championship.
Thirty-two adult corporate teams will be paired with 32 youth teams during the tournament, to be held June 5-6 on Randall's Island. Each team will represent a nation competing at the World Cup, scheduled for June 11 to July 11 in South Africa.
The consulate said Thursday it is partnering with Metro Soccer NY and Play Study Win Inc., which will run six-week coaching programs combined with education that will teach the children about the history and geography of Africa and the nation their team represents. The adults on the corporate teams will be encouraged to visit their partner schools.
