South Africa's tourism minister says the 2010 World Cup attracted mostly first-time visitors to South Africa, and of those, 90 percent said they would return.

Marthinus van Schalkwyk said Monday that September tourism figures had increased 12.9 percent compared to the same month the previous year. He says this indicates that the World Cup will continue to boost tourism.

Van Schalkwyk says tourist arrivals between January and September this year increased 16.8 percent compared to the same period in 2009.

More tourists were from the U.S. than any other country, followed by neighboring Mozambique and Britain. He says 92 percent of North American attendees were first-time visitors to South Africa.
