An Australian senator wants the federal government to ask FIFA to ''refund'' the $46 million that the country spent on its failed bid to host the 2022 World Cup in the wake of the latest bribery allegation.
Nick Xenophon released a statement Monday, under the heading ''Red Card for FIFA,'' saying ''not one more cent'' should be spent on any further World Cup bids until the corruption scandal is resolved.
FIFA has suspended senior executives Mohamed bin Hammam and Jack Warner over bribery allegations in the presidential campaign. There have also been claims that the decision to award Qatar the 2022 World Cup, for which Australia was bidding, was affected by bribes.
Xenophon said ''it appears corrupt and highly questionable behavior goes to the core of FIFA.''
