Kenny Miller came to Rangers' rescue in their 2-1 SPL victory over St Johnstone on Saturday, while Kilmarnock and Hamilton grabbed away wins.

Saints had taken a shock 25th-minute lead through Danny Grainger, before Sasa Papac - who netted both his goals against the Perth side last term - restored parity eight minutes later with a little help from unfortunate defender Kevin Rutkiewicz.

But it was Miller who had the final say as he claimed his fifth goal of the season to add to strikes against Killie and Hibs in Rangers' previous SPL outings.

The win took Walter Smith's men top of the table as Jamie Hamill's injury-time strike consigned previous leaders Aberdeen to their first defeat of the season as they lost 1-0 at home to Killie.

The Dons had started the better of the sides but quickly fell away, and it was Kilmarnock who deserved the win with Irishman Connor Sammon causing the home defence no end of problems.

In Saturday's other game, Dougie Imrie's quickfire thunderbolt earned Hamilton their first points of the season as they beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1-0.

Former Caley midfielder Imrie fired home a 30-yard rocket after just 38 seconds in an explosive start.

The goal-of-the-season candidate proved decisive, inflicting a second consecutive home league defeat on the SPL new-boys.
