The former Manchester United and England midfielder brought the curtain down on a glittering career by retiring in May. "I'm disappointed I never got the chance to play at Boundary Park," he told the club's official website. "I thought I might get the chance to appear in a cup game, but sadly it didn't happen. "I think people assumed that because I'm an Oldham fan and I'm from Oldham that I would finish my career with them, though there was never any contact. "If I felt I could have played on, and Oldham was an option, I would definitely have joined them."
