South Africa moved closer to a spot in the African Cup of Nations by holding Egypt to a 0-0 draw in a qualifier Sunday, which all but ended the host's chances of reaching the tournament it's won a record seven times.

Egypt needed a victory to stay in contention in Group G but struggled to create scoring chances in a game that was moved to Cairo's Military Academy Stadium rather than the much larger Cairo International Stadium for security reasons.

The result leaves South Africa atop the group with eight points from four games, while Egypt remained last with two points.

Even if Egypt wins its last two qualifiers, the three-time defending champion is likely to miss the tournament.
