Alex Ferguson says he will quit coaching entirely when he eventually steps down as Manchester United manager.

The 69-year-old Ferguson says he would emulate famed predecessor Matt Busby in taking a minor role with United upon retirement but intends to effectively sever all his ties with football.

Ferguson has been in charge of United since November 1986 and says "once I'm finished at United, I'll be heading for the hills and the sunset."

Ferguson backed down on a plan to retire in 2002 and has not announced any plans to quit but told ESPN that he "will take other interests up."

Busby became a director when he retired in 1969 but returned for a short spell as manager the following year before stepping down for good.
