Russia switching league schedule
The Russian football federation has voted to switch the country's competition schedule to the autumn-to-spring model followed in most of Europe.
The Russian football league currently runs from March to November, putting the teams out of synchronization with many of their main foreign opponents.
The Russian Football Union's executive committee on Monday voted to make the switch in the fall of 2012, a statement from the federation said.
The transition period will begin in the spring of 2011 and cover three stages over the next year.
Federation head Sergei Fursenko said in the statement that "synchronizing our competitions with the Europeans brings football in Russia to a higher level."
