Ron Jans has been appointed coach of Dutch league club SC Heerenveen, the club confirmed.

Jans, who has been at the helm of fellow Eredivisie side FC Groningen since 2002, signed a two-year contract with the Dutch Cup defending champion.

The 51-year old former Groningen striker is expected to move to his new club at the beginning of next season.

Heerenveen chairman Yme Kuiper said Monday that Jans is "the type of coach that best suits this club,".

Earlier this month, Jan de Jonge stepped down at Heerenveen after a string of poor results. De Jonge came up through the club's ranks to take over from Trond Sollied in September.

Heerenveen, which beat last-placed RKC Waalwijk on Saturday, is 13th in the 18-team league standings with 10 rounds to go.
