Romania's football chief has urged Argentina not to cancel a planned friendly on Aug. 10 at a new stadium in the Romanian capital.

Argentina's football federation said on its website late Monday that the match was canceled following dismissal of coach Sergio Batista.

Mircea Sandu, head of the Romanian football federation, wrote to his Argentine counterpart Julio Grondona on Tuesday calling for the scheduled inaugural game at the ?146 million ($210 million) National Arena to go ahead.

However, Sandu says Romania is also sounding out Portugal as a possible replacement, or postponing the opening until Sept. 6 when Romania plays France.
