Rodgers: Draw should boost us

Scott Sinclair's late equaliser gave the Swans a deserved share of the spoils against Harry Redknapp's title hopefuls and moved them five points clear of the relegation zone at the halfway stage of the season, after being roundly tipped to go down. The result also maintained the south Wales club's excellent home record, with only Manchester United managing to claim victory at the Liberty Stadium so far this term. Against United Rodgers felt his side had been in awe of their opponents and afforded the champions too much respect, but there was no repeat on Saturday as they took the game to high-flying Spurs, and responded to Rafael van der Vaart's 44th-minute opener by having much the better of the second half. And the Northern Irishman says the result marks an important point in Swansea's development. "That was as good a performance as we have produced against a real top side," said Rodgers. "For Spurs to arrive here with their form and quality and for us to play as we did against a top side shows growth. I am very proud of the players. "To show that level of performance against a top team, to come from behind when we could have felt sorry for ourselves was fantastic. "Many sides after playing that well for 43 minutes and then going a goal down could have got down, Tottenham can run over teams like that and win 3-0 or 4-0. "But we showed resolve and resistance as well as quality. Hopefully that provides that extra boost of confidence for the second half of the season. "What this does is it gives us the confidence we can stay in the league, our objective was to stay at this level because it is such an exciting league. "This was a brilliant day for supporters and journalists to see our minnows facing such quality players, but to be the better side shows how the squad and club has grown." Swansea now travel to face Aston Villa on Monday with the Villans boosted by their stunning 3-1 success at Chelsea. The Swans make the trip still searching for their first away win of the season, and while Rodgers hopes the confidence garnered from sharing the spoils against Tottenham will allow his side to break their duck, he insists there is no extra pressure on his players to do so. "I am not very worried about our away form," said Rodgers, who is set to rotate his squad as they face a second game in 48 hours. "We could win away and lose at home, the most important thing for us to is keep putting points on the board. We would like to pick up the win away for the supporters but there is no extra pressure on us. "Their result at Chelsea shows the level of our performance when we drew against them here on a difficult occasion following Gary Speed's death. "They are another team with a wonderful history but we are really buoyed by the performance (against Spurs) and it will give us great confidence."
