Riots in London force matches postponed

Crystal Palace, West Ham, Charlton and Bristol City have postponed Carling Cup home matches which were due to take place on Tuesday night on the request of police after three days of rioting in London.
The Hammers were set to host Aldershot at Upton Park, Reading were scheduled to travel to Charlton while Palace were to host Crawley at Selhurst Park and Bristol City had been preparing to face Swindon
However, all three games have been called off, with the police needing to concentrate their resources elsewhere.
West Ham's game was the first to go, with the Championship side saying on its website: "West Ham United have been asked by the police to postpone the Carling Cup first-round tie with Aldershot Town tomorrow night.
"The club were contacted this evening and told that all major public events in London were to be rearranged because of the need to focus police resources elsewhere.
"Whilst neither the club or police anticipate any issues around the game itself, the club has to comply with the police request.
"No date has yet been set for the rearranged match but the club will be in contact with the Football League and Aldershot."
A statement from Aldershot read: "We understand many supporters will be disappointed with this announcement but confirm that the matter is out of the control of both West Ham United and Aldershot Town Football Club."
Charlton's Valley stadium is close to Lewisham where rioting occurred on Monday night, and shortly after West Ham's announcement came confirmation from the south London club that they too had been asked by police to play at a later date.
A statement on Charlton's website said: "Given the events in London, the police have taken the sensible decision and postponed the match at The Valley, with Greenwich Borough Police Commander Richard Wood advising the Addicks at 10.55pm on Monday that the match should be called off on safety grounds.
"Addicks chief executive Stephen Kavanagh said: 'We've been monitoring the situation as it's been developing all evening and have been in constant contact with police. Clearly the most important factor is the people's safety. The police have told us they believe the match should be postponed on safety grounds and obviously we have taken that advice."
And on Tuesday morning it was confirmed by Crystal Palace that its clash at Selhurst Park has also been postponed, with their stadium being close to the scene of disorder in Croydon on Monday night.
A statement on the Palace website read: "Following consultation with the Borough Commander and a police meeting, the Carling Cup tie against Crawley Town has been postponed."
Crawley manager Steve Evans added on Sky Sports News: "We have all followed it and I got a call from the chief executive saying the police had been in touch.
"It was inevitable. Let's hope the sternest action can be taken and we get back to normality."
Bristol City's Carling Cup tie with Swindon at Ashton Gate has also been postponed following trouble in the city overnight.
City chairman Colin Sexstone told the club's official website: "It's disappointing but we totally understand the reasons given by the police.
"Clearly the most important factor is people's safety and these
are exceptional circumstances the police are dealing with."
