RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) A cyclist on a morning ride around Rio de Janeiro's iconic lagoon was shot Wednesday in an apparent robbery attempt.
The man was shot twice when he resisted an attempt by two assailants to rip a gold necklace from his neck, a police officer said. One bullet grazed the victim's arm and the other the top of his head, the officer said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
The shooting took place near a country club in the exclusive Leblon neighborhood frequented by thousands of tourists every day during the World Cup, according to the newspaper O Globo.
The victim was taken to a hospital while his assailants fled on motorbikes.
