Liverpool have reportedly failed in their attempt to sign former Barcelona star and free agent Victor Valdes after the keeper turned the club down.

The Anfield club have long been linked with a move for Spaniard Valdes to act as first-team competition for current No 1 Simon Mignolet.

Arsenal and Monaco were also considered as suitors for the 32-year-old upon his release from Barcelona, but the Reds have emerged as the favorites within the last month.

Liverpool, who sit ninth in the Premier League table currently, have been prepared to wait for Valdes to recover from a knee injury that has put him out of action since March.

With the indifferent form of Mignolet polarizing opinion, the availability and pedigree of Valdes - who spent 12 years at the Nou Camp - has been discussed as the solution to Brendan Rodgers' problem at the back.

But it has now been reported that Liverpool's efforts to sign the keeper have failed.

According to numerous national newspapers, Valdes has rejected the offer of a four-day 'trial' to prove his fitness before sealing a move to Anfield.

The news come as a blow to the club, who have conceded 10 goals in seven Premier League games so far this season, with their defensive record coming in for significant scrutiny.

In better news for the club, they are now considered the front runners to sign MK Dons midfielder Dele Alli, 18, who is rated at £9million, while Raheem Sterling's new contract will reportedly see his wages nearly trebled.
