Raul Gonzalez scored for Schalke in a 1-0 win over previously undefeated Borussia Moenchengladbach in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
Raul found the net at the third attempt in the 64th minute, when he scrambled the ball over Marc-Andre ter Stegen with his knee. The 19-year-old goalkeeper had already blocked two shots from Raul before the Spaniard's persistence paid off.
''I've never seen us play so well,'' Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick said. ''It was a fantastic game from both teams at a very high pace. Hats off to my team.''
Schalke moves second behind Bayern Munich on goal difference, and level on points with Werder Bremen after four games played.
Hannover is the only unbeaten side, but needed Mohammed Abdellaoue to equalize in a 1-1 draw with Mainz earlier on Sunday.
Abdellaoue met Konstantin Rausch's perfect cross from the left in the 30th minute, after Sami Allagui opened the scoring in the second.
Schalke - which routed HJK Helsinki 6-1 in their Europa League playoff - pushed hard for the opening goal in the second half, Tony Jantschke blocking a close range effort from Raul in the 51st, before ter Stegen denied the impressive 17-year-old Julian Draxler.
Ralf Faehrmann tipped over Mike Hanke's headed effort after Raul's goal, but the goalkeeper was rarely troubled after that.
''When you think that we played 90 minutes on Thursday,'' Rangnick said. ''We hardly allowed any chances to a team like 'Gladbach, although they were rested.''
Alexander Baumjohann inadvertently kicked Lucien Favre on the touchline late in the game, with the Schalke midfielder attempting to clear the ball, and the surprised Moenchengladbach coach reacted with fury, grabbing Baumjohann by his jersey, before he could be calmed down.
''He came into the dressing room. He said it was OK, I said it was OK, and that's it for me,'' Favre said.
Hannover looked tired after its Europa League playoff on Thursday, but improved in the second half when Christian Schulz flashed a shot wide, Rausch hit the crossbar, and Heinz Mueller denied Lars Stindl with an excellent save.
''Today tiredness was definitely to blame, as we lacked concentration and the vital moments,'' Hannover coach Mirko Slomka said.
The best chance fell to Mainz in the 67th, however, when Allagui was in front of an empty net but Marcel Risse played the ball too far ahead of him.
''We don't want to complain about (just) one point,'' Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel said. ''It's also a good sign that we created so many chances.''
Allagui scored the Bundesliga's fastest goal this season after 70 seconds played. Marco Caligiuri, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Risse were all involved in the buildup, Risse beating the offside trap with one touch to set up the Tunisia striker.
Allagui should have scored another in the 16th, when Mainz carved open the Hannover defense again, but he fired to the left after Choupo-Moting put him through.
Ron-Robert Zieler's fingertip save from a Zoltan Stieber free kick pushed the ball onto the post in the 24th, and Nikolce Noveski hit the post again with a header a minute later.
Slomka said his team was ''somewhat dimwitted in the early stages'' before recovering, albeit ''not enough to score the deciding goal. We need to work on that.''
