Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will need between two to three months to recover from knee surgery performed on Wednesday.

Puyol played the final minutes of Saturday's Champions League final win over Manchester United, one of only three appearances since Jan. 22 due to a troublesome left knee, which he hopes the arthroscopic surgery will resolve.

The 33-year-old defender was ruled out of Spain's upcoming friendlies against the United States and Venezuela due to the injury. Barcelona will hope to have Puyol fit for the two-legged Spanish Supercup series against Real Madrid on Aug. 14 and 17.

The Catalan club begins its chase for a fourth straight league trophy on Aug. 21.
