Portugal winger Simao Sabrosa has announced he will no longer play international football.

The Atletico Madrid player cited unspecified personal reasons for his withdrawal in a letter to the Portuguese Football Federation, which posted it on its website Friday.

Sabrosa was the most capped player in the Portugal squad at the World Cup in South Africa where it went out in the round of 16.

He made 85 appearances for his country, scoring 22 goals, since his 1998 debut. Only four others have played more times for Portugal.

Sabrosa's announcement came as Portugal prepares for its 2012 European Championship qualifying campaign, with matches next week against Cyprus and Norway.
