Police are investigating an allegation of racist abuse by a fan during the northeast derby between Sunderland and Newcastle in the Premier League.

Northumbria Police said there was a report of racist language ''used by a supporter in one area of the stadium'' in Sunday's match, which finished 1-1 at the Stadium of Light.

Police praised the behavior of both sets of fans, despite 15 people being arrested from a crowd of almost 50,000.
