All the arrests were for either minor public order offences or criminal damage, a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said. The third-round match, which United won 1-0, was Kenny Dalglish's first since replacing Roy Hodgson as Liverpool manager. Match commander Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts said "risk groups" from both teams had been identified before the fixture and added that "an effective policing operation" had prevented "any serious disorder". Alcohol bans in pubs and off-licences around the ground had already been put in place by police, who drafted in extra officers for the match. There was a large police presence throughout Trafford, Salford and Manchester as well as on the rail networks with officers from GMP, Merseyside Police and British Transport Police. A 9,000-strong contingent of travelling fans were part of the capacity crowd at Old Trafford, the away following around three times larger than usual due to FA Cup rules on ticketing.
