Panel wants new vote on Chilean soccer president

A legal panel says the vote to elect the president of Chile's soccer federation should be overturned and a new election held.

Spanish businessman Jorge Segovia defeated current president Harold Mayne-Nicholls on Nov. 4. Mayne-Nicholls' term expires Jan. 15.

The federation said this month that Segovia was not qualified because he violated federation bylaws by signing commercial contracts. He also owns the Chilean soccer club Union Espanola.

The five-member panel includes the president of Chile's Supreme Court and agrees with the federation. Segovia says the panel acted ''illegally.''

Segovia's election prompted national coach Marcelo Bielsa to resign last month. Bielsa said he would not work for Segovia if elected.
