The Magpies captain has been in talks about extending his current deal, which has two seasons left to run. And the midfielder told the Evening Chronicle the paperwork will be done "next week or the week after". The news will be welcomed by Toon boss Alan Pardew - not least because Joey Barton recently allied his future to his skipper's, saying: "If Nolan signs, I will." Barton has been linked with the likes of West Ham and Liverpool having voiced his concern at the January sale of Andy Carroll. Nolan, meanwhile, has a chance of returning from injury on Sunday against the Reds - the team he supported growing up on Merseyside.
