The Nigeria Football Federation says coach Samson Siasia has been fired after the national team failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations.

The federation issued a statement Friday saying that Siasia and the rest of his coaching team were ''promptly dispensed'' over their failure. The federation said it hoped to have a new coach named by Wednesday.

Federation officials and Siasia did not answer calls for comment Friday night.

Siasia's team drew with Guinea in the final round of qualifiers to miss out on the tournament, leading the NFF to demand an explanation for what it called ''the embarrassment brought to the nation.''

Siasia apologized for the failure but has also faced strong criticism.
