The Nigerian Football Federation says it has added Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni to the list of candidates to take over as national team coach.

The federation has issued a statement announcing the decisions it made during a meeting of its executive committee, with Trapattoni joining a shortlist of potential replacements that includes Ratomir Dujkovic, Guus Hiddink, Bruno Metsu, Hassan Shehata, Peter Taylor and Louis van Gaal.

Nigeria, which will compete at the World Cup finals this summer, fired Shaibu Amodu at the weekend after he led the team to a third-place finish at the African Cup of Nations.

The federation says it hopes to hire a new coach by the end of February.
