Barry Nicholson is happy to accept the consequences of a competitive squad at Fleetwood since his summer move from Preston.

The 34-year-old midfielder started the Cod Army's first four games this season but was restricted to a substitute role in the victories over Aldershot and Morecambe.

In the latter clash Nicholson came on to complete the scoring and hopes to impress boss Micky Mellon with further key contributions in the coming weeks.

"It's a really good squad," the former Preston man told Press Association Sport. "The manager spoke to us all as a group and said we're going to use the squad wisely and try and keep everybody fresh.

"The good thing is we've not got many injuries just now so everybody's really in contention for a place.

"When you're on the bench and you come you've really got to try and do something to catch the manager's eye to get back in the side. It's something that I've been looking for, to get my first goal, and hopefully can add a few more."
