Newcastle won for the first time in six matches Tuesday, with Peter Lovenkrands and Leon Best clinching a 2-0 victory at Birmingham in the Premier League.
Jonas Gutierrez set up both goals at a rain and windswept St Andrew's as Newcastle recorded its first win since star striker Andy Carroll joined Liverpool last month for 35 million pounds (then $56 million).
Lovenkrands got ahead of his marker at the near post to tap in Gutierrez's deep left-wing cross after less than two minutes.
Another cross from Gutierrez five minutes into the second half was headed in by Best, securing a win that moved Newcastle up to ninth in the standings.
